National Take Your Child to Work Day

So, today is National Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day. http://www.daughtersandsonstowork.org/wmspage.cfm?parm1=485

Aaron came home yesterday telling me that his teachers in SACC (School Age Child Care-After School Program) told him that he didn't have to go to school today and that he was supposed to go to work with a parent. At first I laughed at him. But then I looked it up and sure enough today is the day to bring your kids to work.

After discussing this with Kris I decided it was okay for me to bring Aaron to work with me today. I should mention that whenever school is closed for Federal/State Holidays or whenever there is inclement weather, Aaron comes to work with me. I was told when I first started working here that it was okay to bring your kid to work when you need to.

Well my boss threw a fit this morning. I was told that I was not being fair to him by bringing my son to work with me. Of course I was completely taken back by this. I mean he is the one who told me I was allowed to bring my child to work with me. Apparently, bringing your child to work with you on the actual "Bring your child to work day" is not acceptable in my office. I was told it is okay when school is closed or my child is sick, but when school is open it is not acceptable.

Hmmm.... somehow I feel this is a stab at my parenting.

  1. That's because it is. Take your child to work day is meant for children to gain/learn something from it that they can't learn in school. What working for money means, learn about a type of work that they may be interested in, seeing parents as more than parents, value of a dollar, etc. And if your a tiger cub, it's even an elective that you can earn a bead for...

Since Aaron goes to work with you already when school is closed but you have to work...did Aaron really get anything out of it? Or was it an excuse for him not to go to school?

  2. Well normally when he is there, he doesnt do anything but play. But i actually had planned to do some of the activities they have on the website. We did one about dreams for the future but not long after I was yelled at for bringing him so i didnt want to take time away from my work to do more activities with him so i just let him watch dvds the rest of the day. The website had a lot of cool activities to do with your child but it involves taking time away from your work and since I was already yelled at once i didnt want to get yelled at again.
